You may feel a little discomfort when we insert the catheter and while we are filling the bladder. But this will pass off in seconds.
Once the test is finished we will remove the tubes. You may be given a date fora follow up appointment for the report. If needed the report can be sent to you so that you can discuss it with your doctor
A few patients may develop a urinary tract infection. You are advised to drink more water than you normally do for 3 days.
You should contact your doctor or the hospital if you notice increased temperature, frequency of passing urine, smelling or cloudy urine or if you feel generally unwell.
The aim of this leaflet is to answer your questions about urodynamics test. It explains the benefits, risks and alternatives of the procedure as well as what you can expect when you come to hospital.
If you have any further questions, please speak to doctor or clinic staff.
It is a test to observe the changes in the bladder during filling and emptying.
The test will recreate the symptoms you are experiencing and enable us to diagnose the problem and offer you a treatment plan.
There is no other way to gain the information the test will provide.
You will receive a voiding diary with this handout. Complete it over a three day period. It does not need to be three days in a row. We need to know how much you are drinking and urinating with the exact time of the events. We appreciate it is sometimes difficult to do this but it is very important to do your best as it will give us valuable information. If you are on a catheter you do not need to fillin the diary.
If you are taking tablets to improve your bladder function, you need to stop these medications for 1 week prior to the test. The common drugs are Oxybutinin, solifenacin, Tolterodine, Trospium, Darifenacin, Mirabegrone
If you are unsure of which medicines to stop please contact the clinic. Failure to stop these medicines may result in the test being cancelled as they may mask the problem we are trying to identify. However you must continue any medicines you take for other conditions.
You have to do a urinalysis and urine culture & sensitivity test a week before the appointment. If positive you may have to take an antibiotic as advised by the doctor based on the culture & sensitivity report.
It is also important that you are not constipated when coming for.the test as this could affect the result. If you are constipated, take some laxatives (available from your local doctor).
THINGS TO BE DONE ON THE DAY OF THE TEST
You can eat and drink normally on the day of the test.
On the day of the test, it is good to wear clothes that are easy to remove, as you may have to change over to a suit for the procedure.
Try to arrive with a comfortably full, or at least half-full, bladder, as you will be asked to pass urine at the start of the test. Do not pass urine until you have spoken to the nurse who is performing the test. If this is not possible arrive early for the appointment and drink to fill up your bladder. If you have problems holding on with a full bladder, we will make alternative arrangements.

The test will take around an hour to complete.
You will be asked to pass urine in a commode (special toilet) that will measure the rate and volume of you passing urine.
You will be given a prophylactic antibiotic injection before the test
After that, the area around the urethra is cleaned and a catheter is passed into your bladder, to fill it and record pressure changes. Another catheter will be passed through the rectum to get the pressure inside your abdomen. The test is carried out in the sitting position.
